We are told that it is the nicotine in cigarettes that is addictive but the nicotine separated from tobacco is not particularly addictive. Apparently, it is the delivery of nicotine through the tobacco smoke which makes it so addictive as it is the fastest way of delivering it into the blood stream. Nicotine hijacks the brain mechanism into releasing high amounts of dopamine which in turn motivates the reward system, serotonin is released which makes us feel good. The brain then lays down a memory that smoking is important as it makes us feel good. This is the nicotine trick. Cigarettes contain over 4000 chemicals and many are highly toxic including cyanide, arsenic and formaldehyde! Tobacco Companies have been known to add sugar and liquorice to cigarette filters to make them taste better and to make them more addictive! When you inhale cigarette smoke your body registers the presence of these toxic chemicals and adrenaline is released, respiration and blood pressure increase giving a buzz which unfortunately, is interpreted by the smoker as en-joyable!
It is so hard to ignore the cravings.
